Lerida Delbridge

Lerida began learning the violin at the age of three and at fifteen she began her undergraduate studies with William Hennessy as part of the Melbourne University Program for High Achieving Students. After periods of study in Switzerland at the Menuhin Academy and the Netherlands, she was the first string player and the youngest graduate to attain a Doctor of Musical Arts from The University of Melbourne in 2005.

Lerida’s love of touring and chamber music was sparked at the age of nine, when she performed throughout Europe as principal violinist and soloist with the Junior Strings of Melbourne (JSM). A second tour with JSM followed in 1994 and in 1998 she toured Europe as concertmaster with the Geminiani Orchestra, performing in the Dubrovnik and Graz Festivals and the Concertgebouw. In 2000 Lerida toured Australia as Principal 2nd with the Australian Youth Orchestra and Pinchas Zukerman. Further Australian, European and Asian Tours followed shortly after with Camerata Austraia, The Young Piano Trio of Melbourne and the Florizel Piano Trio.

Lerida has been the recipient of numerous prizes and awards, including the ABC Young Artists Award, The University of Melbourne AE Floyd Scholarship, an Australian Postgraduate Award, two Ian Potter Cultural Arts Grants and two Australia Council Grants. In recognition of her achievements within the Arts and service to the community, Lerida was nominated as Young Australian of Year by Yarra Valley Grammar School in her final year of schooling.

In more recent years, Lerida has appeared as concertmaster with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and as soloist with the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra (formerly Australia Pro Arte), Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, The University of Melbourne Orchestra, Melbourne University Chamber Orchestra and Stonnington Symphony. Her performance of the Beethoven Violin Concerto was described ‘assured, lyrical and warm with remarkable finesse’.

Lerida is currently a core player with the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra and is a member of the String Teaching Faculty at The University of Melbourne.  In 2009, Lerida was appointed a full time member of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

Lerida is the grateful recipient of a generous loan of a Joseph and Antonius Gagliano violin from a private donor.
